Phase 1
Phase 1 of the Karanda Water System Renewal Project focused on Water Acquisition. Water historically was sourced from the nearby Ruya river. During the war for independence, the initial river intake system was damaged beyond use. Since 1980 any water pumped from the river utilized temporary pump and pipe arrangements, as shown in the picture to the left. As treatment chemicals were difficult to get during the years of economic down-turn between 2004 and 2009, the hospital relied on the water it could pump from 6 wells. Droughts in recent years have rendered those wells less productive. A major effort began in 2013 to rebuild the river intake system. Financial partners as well as technical expertise from the TEAM office enabled us to construct a system that now provides the hospital with treated water from the Ruya river. Our wells continue to supplement this source.
Various pictures of this portion of the project may be seen in the "Technical" Gallery. Clicking on the picture to the left will direct you to that gallery. Further revision of this phase components will be accomplished during 2021. Finances are needed. Thanks for praying and helping.

Phase 2
Phase 2 involves the replacement of the entire water distribution system on the station. This portion of the project was accomplished in 2016 in an amazing flurry of activity over the course of 3 weeks.

Phase 3
During Phase 3, building plumbing will be repaired or renewed before it is hooked to the new water system. A water meter will record water usage. Additionally, a major part of this phase is replacing aging electric water heaters with solar water heater units. This will lower our overall reliance on electricity from the national grid or our generators, during power outages. The total cost of this project is approximately $300,000.00. A major donor has already helped us with just over $50,000.00 of this. We are seeking other friends to help us with this. Water heaters are currently being installed as funds become available.

Phase 4
With more water will come additional challenges with the station's effluent. Work in Phase 4 has been started and is concentrating on the renewal or upgrade of both the hospital and the nursing school's septic systems. To date, the hospital's system has been completely redone. For the first time in years, we do not have septic gray water flowing out on the surface at the lower end of our system. Work on the older sections of the Nursing School septic system has yet to begun. The hospital has already invested around $20,000.00 in this effort and we are anticipating at least $10,000.00 of materials and labor is still needed to complete Phase 4.

Phase 5
During these years of drought many of our neighbors from the surrounding community have come to Karanda for water. This has put a strain on our limited resources. On any given day, Karanda needs to provide water for up to 700 people. Additional usage from community members has left us with a daily shortfall. Over the years, each village has been provided a water-point by the government. This usually consists of a drilled deep well and a bush pump (hand pump) with its associated rods and pipes. Though the government "owns" any water pump hardware installed on public lands, they have not been able to pay for the up-keep of these systems. Of the 12 village systems that immediately surround Karanda, only 3 pumps are working.
This phase was essentially finished in 2020. 13 LifePumps were supplied by DesignOutreach and installed. Another 15 community pumps have been paid for and are yet to be installed. Praise the Lord!
